Social distancing? Stay five feet away from others? How the heck am I supposed to be dating and making a connection with someone during this pandemic? And who’s even thinking about this!!!
Honestly, you can, but in all fairness, you should put things on hold. Hard to focus on being your best self, leaning in, getting to know someone when the overall thought seems to be in doomsday mode. Being safe right now is the most important thing for all of us.
However, there are many wonderful opportunities to be had to get to know someone in a different way.
How many of you have seen the show Love Is Blind? The premise of the show that couples “date” behind a wall. They have mock dates where they get to know each other by deep diving into their psyche. They open up more because they have created a safe space and are not judging each other by physical attraction. Some of the couples actually ended up getting married-many did not….however, it was a great exercise in human behavior.
What can we learn here? Some opportunities can be:
- Talking on the phone versus texting. Imagine that. Hearing someone’s voice.
- Asking someone who you are interested in to write about himself and herself and send you the answer. These stories can open up pathways of conversation, many of which we would never think about asking. Start with asking them to write about a decade of their life.
- Love Letters. YES! Who doesn’t love to see the written word on paper and open up the envelope after a long day of social distancing.
- We can still have relationships and not be in the same LITERAL room, but can still get to know each other via technology. Have you tried Facebook, Snap Chat or Zoom?
Now, go wash your hands……
